27 years later, September 1, 2016 his remains where recovered SW 22 direct miles from his home in St. Joseph in a pasture belonging to Voss Farms off the Business 23 E in Paynesville, Minnesota. Police where led to the location via a confession from Danny Heinrich.

Krista's remains were discovered by turtle trappers on July 23rd just before 8:00 PM in the weeds near an abandoned garage off the side of a scarcely traveled road in Holmes County, Ohio near the town of Loudonville area. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted. Police believe Krista was taken to the home of Buell after the abduction, kept her in the van a few days before disposal. She had been raped and strangled.
